Most of you know how PickleSmash started from our humble little endeavor in the kitchen, to the realization that this is something that people around the country could truly love. If you aren’t familiar with that story, check it out here.
What a lot of people don’t realize is just how much Liz and I went through in that first year. Once we knew we had a pickled gem on our hands, and were gaining some passionate pickle followers as White’s Pickle Salsa, we knew we wanted to take this to the next level.
I’ve explored a lot of businesses, and Liz (and our family) has been there to support me every step of the way (with more than a few eye-rolls along the way). I knew that I had to make our revolutionary pickle salsa our winner. I eagerly jumped in to learning all of the ins and outs of the CPG (Consumer Packaged Goods) industry, and what moves we needed to make to be successful.
And wow, what a learning curve. From production, to co-packers, to traveling, and finding the right investors and team, we’ve lived and breathed pickles and pickle salsa for well over two years now. And I’ll be honest, there were times that we struggled. I mean really struggled. You want to put your marriage to the test? Try creating novel item to build a whole new segment in the massive food industry while raising kids. It will really teach you what you’re made of. But through it all, we found our groove. I’d even say that learning how to manage our time, and our stress and our new responsibilities to our investors and followers on top of our family responsibilities upped our game. It made us stronger. This process taught us both how to communicate and work together again. And how to truly believe in ourselves again.
Our true launchpad into this new and exciting time was finding (and being accepted into) SKU. From young entrepreneurs learning how to put together a business plan, to a real, budding business on the cusp of launching to the big time, SKU helped us find our voice, connected us with titans of the industry, and leaders who truly shared our passion for what we are doing. We connected with mentors, leaders, and investors – and picked up a lot of cheerleaders along the way. SKU opened us up to ideas we hadn’t thought of, taught us to push our boundaries, and our ideas of what our company was and needed to be. From SKU, PickleSmash was born.
Through our name change (it’s HARD to give up your name on something that you’ve built with pride), to building a whole new brand around a new network of inspirational and successful people, we’ve found our joy again. Watching the first jars of the new PickleSmash roll through production brought me a sensation that I hadn’t felt in a long time: Pure Joy. All of our hard work, all of our learning, all of our struggles are a cumulation of this point.
I’m proud of where we are, and what we’ve accomplished. My family is stronger, our brand and presence has grown, and we’ve grown as people making connections in a simultaneously small and massive world.
In short, PickleSmash has forever changed our lives for the better. I’m eternally grateful to the people who have helped support us along the way, and I can’t wait to share with you what’s in store as we enter Phase II of the Pickle Revolution.
